“Best cartoonist in the world”*, London multi-instrumentalist & producer Benbo is sitting in his Brixton studio looking back at a year in which he became slightly less obscure.
His rapidly growing Pink Lizard Music imprint, set up out of “a deep distrust of almost everything except my fellow artists,” saw support from the BBC, Spotify and Pigeons & Planes in 2015.
Record Store Day designated their Pablo ‘Feels Like’ clear vinyl 10″ – a Benbo co-production – an official Exclusive release, and Indie Shuffle‘s premiere of his own ‘If You Feel Emotional’ (co-written with novelist A.K. Benedict) went on to oust Foals from the #1 Alternative chart spot.
Eddy Temple Morris crowned Christmas release ‘Nurvel Durd’ his inaugural Friday Night Hand Job and invited him down to Soho Radio as his resident cartoonist. This led to a series of improbable listener-requested drawings including ‘David Bowie eating a donut from the mystikal hand of Brain Eno’.
‘Nurvel Durd’ is on this compilation, along with the aforementioned ‘If You Feel Emotional’ (mixed by Strokes producer Gordon Raphael), the somewhat sleazy ‘I’m Gone’ (written with tournament chess player and poker champion Jet Wintzer), the lo-fi ode to record collections ‘Sheep On Drugs’ and the dazed crowd favourite ‘Black Hole’.
Add some lo-fi cassette weirdness à la Daniel Johnston plus a full complement of his remixes for fellow Pink Lizard Music artists The Fatty Acids, Pablo and Alexandra Benedict & Tris Taylor, and a vault full of 2015 surprises is sealed.
Now back to 2016.
